Ingredients

For the French Toast

  • 1 1-pound loaf French bread, cut diagonally into 1-inch slices
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 ½ cups half-and-half cream
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

For the Syrup Topping

  • ¾ cup butter
  • 1 ⅓ cups brown sugar
  • 3 tablespoons light corn syrup

Instructions

  • Butter a 9x13-inch baking dish and arrange bread slices in the bottom.
  • In a large bowl, beat together eggs, milk, half-and-half, vanilla, and cinnamon. Pour over bread and refrigerate overnight.
  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Heat butter, brown sugar, and corn syrup in a saucepan until bubbling.
  • Pour syrup over the bread mixture.
  • Bake uncovered for 40 minutes.
  • Serve warm with fresh berries and syrup.

Notes

  • Bread Tip: Use day-old or slightly stale French bread to help absorb the custard.
  • Make Ahead: Best when soaked overnight, but a 2-hour soak can work in a pinch.
  • Add-ins: Try adding sliced bananas, chopped pecans, or a pinch of nutmeg for variety.
  • Serving Suggestion: Top with maple syrup, whipped cream, or powdered sugar for extra indulgence.
